IV conscious sedation keeps you awake while leaving you feeling remarkably calm from start to finish. It's especially useful for nervous patients, anyone with a strong gag reflex, or those needing a lengthier or more complex procedure, and many patients find they remember very little afterwards. There's a practical upside too: because you're relaxed and settled, we can often complete considerably more treatment in one sitting than usual, cutting down the number of separate appointments needed. Please note: IV conscious sedation is available only to patients aged 18 and above.

We plan your treatment thoroughly in advance so your sedation appointment is used to best effect, often combining multiple procedures into a single visit.

IV sedation
A thin cannula is inserted into a vein in your hand or arm, delivering the sedative gradually. You'll feel calm and drowsy while remaining conscious and able to follow instructions.

Recovery
Once your treatment is complete, you'll rest in our recovery area before being discharged into the care of the accompanying adult. Someone will need to take you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.

No. IV conscious sedation does not send you to sleep. You'll stay conscious and able to respond to your dentist, while feeling deeply relaxed throughout treatment.
Most patients find their recollection of the appointment is fairly hazy afterwards. Everyone reacts a little differently, but it's common for the whole visit to feel as though it passed in a flash.
No. A responsible adult needs to take you home, and you should avoid driving, operating machinery, drinking alcohol or signing important paperwork until the next day.
Often, quite a lot. Being calm and settled means we can frequently fit considerably more into one sedation visit than would typically take several standard appointments.
